‘Aliyah’: The Numbers Fall Faster than They Rise

With Jewish immigration to Israel hitting a low point, Israel is reaching out to 500,000 Israelis living abroad to urgently return home.

Huge fanfare follows when a plane of 300 new immigrants from North America lands on the tarmac of Ben Gurion Airport, infusing new blood and money into the country and fulfilling prophecies of Jews returning to Israel.

However, Israelis are moving out of Israel, particularly to America, at a faster pace than they are coming—3 to 1 in 2006. More than half a million Israelis live abroad. And unofficial estimates say at least half of American Jews who make aliyah (immigrate to Israel) return to the US within five years.
